Each year, Taste of Playa will donate proceeds from the event to a local non-profit food or clean water program. The goal of the Taste of Playa is to help develop and sustain community programs that will have a positive effect on the residents of Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya.

Proceeds from Taste of Playa 2009 will be awarded to Ak Lu’um International School, Playa del Carmen's only non-profit learning institution. The Waldorf trained teachers at Ak Lu'um combine a Head, Heart and Hands approach with Learning Through the Arts methodology to teach curricular subjects such as Math, Science and Social Studies. This small bilingual school is a great option for families in the Riviera Maya who are looking for a more holistic approach to education for their school age children. Founded in 2006, Fundacion Ak Lu’um A.C. provides a safe and inclusive learning environment, successfully integrating physically and developmentally challenged students into mainstream classroom settings. Thirty-six percent of the students receive full scholarship relief. The jungle campus, designed to be in harmony with its surroundings is built to be self sustaining. Children are taught environmental studies in addition to the nationally standardized curriculum required by the Mexican Government (SEP). Students maintain a garden and raise chickens, harvesting the organic eggs for use in the school's kitchen, and participate in a myriad of activities designed to stimulate not just their minds and bodies but their hearts as well. Funds raised by Taste of Playa 2009 will provide the school with clean, safe drinking water for students, teachers and volunteers for the 2009/2010 school year.
